Lighten Up

For many people when they think of designing a room they think furniture. But a big piece of the overall design comes down to lighting. Lighting creates the overall mood of a room; it can help highlight specific details of a room like a bookcase, chair, or even a piece of art. The type of lighting you choose for a room can dramatically change the entire space for better or for worst. It’s important to understand the different characteristics of lighting and where to use them in your home.

Ambient
Ambient lighting is more of a hidden light that gives off a certain glow to the space and creates some shadowing. Sconces and pendants are some examples of ambient lighting.  Adding a light to a dimmer allows you to control the ambient light of that space.

Accent
Accent lighting adds interest or highlights a certain object such as art, or an interesting architectural aspect of a space, like a niche. Even a modest assortment of flickering candles acts as accent lighting.

Task
Task lighting is exactly how it sounds; lighting that is used for a specific purpose like a floor lamp for reading or a light for doing your makeup.

No matter what type of light you choose make sure you that it will bring in the best characteristics, and that it will help highlight the strong features of the space. With summer around the corner don't forget to think about outdoor lighting!
