One of the hardest things for me to do when designing a room
is to not overthink the rules. I don’t
really like this word “rules” because it forces us to think in a very
simple-minded way and in design that’s the last thing we want going
though our minds. Some of the best-designed rooms have aspects that don’t
necessarily follow the “rules” but they work off of each other to create a room
that has much more warmth and depth than it would have otherwise. Interior design is nothing less then an
artistic expression, which requires a lot of creative decision. In art there
are basic rules to follow that help the artist paint themselves through the
process. But even the best works of art break some sort of rule, so don’t be
afraid to break a rule here or there because it might be exactly what that room
needs. Below are some “Rules” to break every once and a while.
Never mix black and blue, this is one of the rules that when
broken the right way work so well together. I mean look at how gorgeous this dining room is! Those blue suede chairs and the navy wall add this sense of glamour next to the black table and buffet, all while keeping with the coastal vibe.
